Embossed Resist + Watercolouring

Hello, hello! I am back from a trip to South Island and boy was it breathtakingly beautiful down under! I am already dreaming about having a holiday cottage there so here goes a card inspired by my trip… Only 273,946 more to make and sell before I can afford it!

 

I arrived at Christchurch on Day 1 and was greeted by a gloomy but otherwise fine morning. Nonetheless, all it took was half an hour of strolling around in the central city before it started weighing me down. While the post-earthquake rebuild effort was praiseworthy, it was simply gut-wrenching and painful to imagine the people and buildings that were once there. My heart goes out to those affected, and I pray for the safety of the world.

This experience reminded me of my parents’ home, and what a safe haven it was to me even in my darkest days. I used images and a sentiment from the Make A Home stamp set by Simon Says Stamp which I carefully masked and stamped on a watercolour paper using Versamark ink, before I heat embossed them in white and black respectively. I love the fine detail embossing powder by Simon Says Stamp for crisp outlines. The focal point image was stamped with VersaFine in Onyx Black on a white textured card stock, and adhered one on top of another using Ranger’s Multi Medium Matte for added dimension.

 

I remember seeing a card by Keeway some time ago where she used pastel colours to make an otherwise gloomy-looking card pop. With that in mind, I painted the houses with heavily-diluted distress inks in Picked Raspberry, Spiced Marmalade, Mustard Seed, Mowed Lawn, Shaded Lilac and Lucky Clover, and the sky in Hickory Smoke. The heat embossing made it easy to keep the watered down ink in the lines, which was fantastic to create clearly-defined images.

I added a layer of craft foams behind the focal point image, and doodled some hearts coming out of its chimney in a red Copic marker and coated them with Glossy Accents. I then drew a faux stitched line around all the edges with a white gel pen and mounted it onto a plum textured card base with foam tapes. I also tied a bow with a grey and white twine at the top of the card and that finished my card for today.
