Watercolouring + Ink Smooshing
Hello, hello! Today’s card is inspired by the watercolour-themed challenge by Lawnscaping. The truth is, watercolour and I, we do not get along well. To put it simply, “letting go” and “enjoying the unexpected” are not exactly what I am known for. But I decided to pick up my paintbrush anyway and go on a little adventure!
I wanted to create a vibrant background à la Kelly Latevola so using an acetate sheet, I smooshed Mustard Seed, Lucky Clover, Shaded Lilac and Spun Sugar on a piece of watercolour paper, one at a time, making sure the colour was dry before I moved on to the next. You will find that even when the colours are dry, they would still mix with each other as distress inks are meant to react with water. Remember what I said about “letting go” and “enjoying the unexpected”? This is where they were put to test and surprisingly, I was fine with that! (Fine, I did cheat a wee bit by dabbing extra ink on where I felt the colour was too faint to my liking.)
While leaving the background to dry, I worked on the star of my card – a stinking cute little puppy from Playful Pups by Mama Elephant! I stamped it on a scrap watercolour paper in Versafine Onyx Black before painting it in watered down Black Soot and Mustard Seed for the collar. After I fussy cut my stamped images, I always make sure I go over the edges with a black marker (or in whatever colours they are stamped in) to soften them. I then eyeballed the position of the puppy and stamped the sentiment from the same set right next to it.
Finally, I popped up the puppy as well as the speech bubble from Mama Elephant’s Small Talk with some foam tapes. I finished off the card with some silver heart sequins which I covered in Ranger’s Glossy Accents. I also applied the Glossy Accents on the speech bubble, the puppy’s collar and nose.
So, what do you think of my watercolour piece? Can we pass off as mates now?
Thank you for stopping by and see you soon!
Hugs, Michelle

I saw this darling card on the SSS blog, so had to come and check it out. It has my two favorite things, dogs and watercolor. I understand your feelings of not getting along with watercolors, but I think the “experts” in our field are right…the more you practice, the better your work becomes. Besides, have you ever seen a watercolor background that is “not right”?
